Our Legacy of Care: From Tallahassee to the Southeast
The story of Dermatology Associates of Tallahassee and Dermatology Southeast begins with a pioneering spirit and an unwavering commitment to patient care.
In 1957, Dr. Stuart C. Smith became the first dermatologist in Tallahassee—and for over a decade, the only one between Pensacola and Jacksonville. His dedication to providing expert, compassionate care set the standard for dermatology in the region.
In 1985, Dr. Armand B. Cognetta, Jr., joined Dr. Smith and soon took over the practice as Dr. Smith prepared for retirement. Under Dr. Cognetta’s leadership, the practice continued to grow and evolve. In 1990, after completing advanced training in Mohs micrographic surgery, Dr. Cognetta rebranded the practice as Dermatology Associates of Tallahassee (DAT). That same year, Dr. Smith returned part-time, continuing to support the practice he helped build.
DAT quickly became a trusted name in skin care throughout North Florida. In 1991, Dr. Cognetta oversaw the construction of DAT’s first dedicated building, and over the years, the campus expanded into a hub of dermatologic excellence with more than eight buildings along Riggins Road in Tallahassee. To better serve patients throughout the region, DAT launched remote clinics in rural communities like Marianna, Carrabelle, Madison, Blountstown, Perry, and Bainbridge, GA—bringing top-tier specialists’ care closer to our patients.
In 2014, the practice expanded to Panama City and launched a new brand: Dermatology Southeast (DSE). While the name was new, the mission remained the same: to provide the highest level of personalized, compassionate dermatologic care. Today, Dermatology Southeast includes locations in Panama City, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and the Palm Beaches.
What began with just five employees has now grown to a team of over 250 professionals, including more than 15 board-certified dermatologists and providers.
